2nd grade Pablo Picasso-inspired Self Portaits.

After drawing a self portrait from observation, students drew a self-portrait from imagination. Students discovered that line, shapes and colors can communicate meaning. Students thought about a time when they had mixed feelings and used this experience as well as Picasso's Cubist style  to inspire their self portraits. They drew their portraits and added color with watercolors.

Kindergarten "Beautiful Oops"-Inspired Imaginary Blob Creatures

We first read the book Mouse Paint where the mice play in puddles of paint so Kindergarteners made little "puddles" of primary colored watercolor  and then used a straw to blow the puddles and spread them.

Then we read Beautiful Oops where they turn all these mistakes into other things. Students learned to become flexible thinkers  and so they used colored pencils, sharpie and cut white circles for eyes to transform the blobs into something else.

5th Grade Cultural Masks

After doing research on through multiple sources on the internet and by reading books, students chose a culture of a country they were interested in and created a mask that reflected that culture in some way. They were able to choose the type of media (art materials) to use but all created paper masks. Here are some samples of student work. Stay tuned for more!
