In connection to third graders learning about democratic principles including the common good, students created a quilt to support the common good by creating figures that communicated a positive theme/ message to be given to an orphanage in Mexico.
Students analyzed the artwork of Keith Haring and determined some positive themes about social justice. They also noticed that he showed movement through lines and the body poses.
Students then discovered that body language can be used to convey messages. Students decided on a central message/ theme to communicate to the orphans and conveyed it with their figure as the center of interest. They used oil pastels and watercolors to add complementary colors.
