Second grade students analyzed different images and determined a common theme of both symmetrical balance and landscapes. Students identified different things in everyday life that can be considered symmetrically balanced and observed that when a landscape is next to water, there is a reflection which can give the illusion of symmetrical balance. Students created their own landscape using the collage technique using hand painted/textured paper to cut into different parts of their world. They first began by creating their own mountains using a "butterfly print". They added different natural features and landforms by cutting and combining basic geometric and organic shapes.
