Third Grade Illuminated Letter Prints

Third graders learned about the history of illuminated letters and analyzed different illuminated letter designs which inspired them to create their own. Students identified which letters are symmetrical and which ones are asymmetrical and chose to create a composition that was either asymmetrically or symmetrically balanced. After learning about the printmaking process they created four different prints, with two of them on paper that they painted with warm and cool water colors. Then they added a bored with character traits that began with that letter. Students' learning was extended by having them create another print in another color to create an acrostic poem. Stay tuned for more student work and acrostic poems!
