The Dot-inspired Illuminated Letters by 2nd Grade

Students were inspired by the story, The Dot to create a background starting with just a dot and turn it into something beautiful.

In connection to students leaning about technology in social studies, they discovered that before technologies like the printing press and computers were invented, people wrote by hand. Illuminated letters helped show important parts of the text and also gave clues as to the main idea of a text. Students used chalk pastels for the background and 'illuminated 'their letters with metallic markers

STREEAM CLUB exploring how he brain works and brain malleability to reinforce a growth mindset!

The STREEAM club (Science/technology/engineering/emotional skills/arts/math) club is lead by Ms. Ferri and Ms. Dematatis working with third and fourth grade students who would strongly benefit from it's academic and social/emotional focus. The goal is to provide an interdisciplinary, problem-based, collaborative approach to learning; focusing on the whole child in order to improve critical thinking, academic success skills as well as social/emotional skills.

Students have been learning about how the brain works and brain malleability to support a growth mindset. Each session begins with reinforcing a growth mindset and working on some academic success skill or social/emotional skill. Then students work together and individually to solve a "challenge"

Students began by collaborating to out a Brain puzzle together

After watching a video on brain malleability, students determined that by adding water to a sponge helps it to expand or "grow" similar to our brain that grows when we learn new things, challenge ourselves  and solve problems.

Stay tuned for more posts about the STREEAM CLUB!
