1st grade Clay Dinosaurs

First graders looked at dinosaurs that used to live in different countries such as El Salvador, Mexico and China. Then they created pinch pots out of clay. Students then transformed the pinch pots into dinosaurs. They added color by mixing primary colors to create secondary colors and added details with primary colors. Stay tuned for the 3D island habitats they will make for their dinosaurs!

Students created monsters out of shapes  that conveyed a mood. Students first created texture rubbings to give their monsters texture, then discovered how to create other shapes from squares.

1st grade Leonardo da Vinci-inspired inventions

First grade students thought of a way to either help them to do something or help others by creating an invention. We learned about Leonardo da Vinci's invention sketches to create our own. Then students used found objects which they classified as being either geometric forms or organic forms (form is a 3D shape) to build an invention sculpture based on their sketch. Try to figure out what objects they combined to make their sculpture!

Fourth grade students learning how to use art to learn the visualizing reading comprehension strategy

Students first were to describe an artwork to a partner. The partner had to visualize by creating a mental picture in their mind, then draw what they saw in their mind.

Then students tranferred this skill to text. They first read a short descriptive sentence, visualized and created a drawing. Then they chose a poem to illustrate with their mental picture

4th grade Jackson Pollock- inspired Figures in Action

Jackson Pollock's artwork^

Students learned how to measure basic human figure proportions and then used them to create a figure in an action pose of some kind of exercise they enjoy. They were inspired by Jackson Pollock's "action painting " and created their own action painting with analogous colors. Then they chose to either use a mannequin doll, sports picture or classmate as their model to help them draw. We discussed point of view and how they could write a short narrative based on the point of view of the athlete or announcer.

Fourth grade students learning how to use the visualizing reading strategy in art!

Students chose an artwork to then describe to another student. The other student would visualize in their mind what the artwork would look like and then created a drawing of it.

Pre K students were inspired by the story, The Dot to create their own "dot" painting
